Born and raised in the southwest corner of Lower Michigan in the small town of Buchanan. I once again live on the same property where I grew up.I started archery target shooting at five years old (1956). My first hunting trip with mom and dad was when I was 12 yrs, old. We went to Baldwin Michigan, because the deer herds in our hometown area were very sparse. Today, deer herds here, have grown substantially in our area. During bow and arrow deer hunting season today, we are allowed a doe permit per day, unlike the 70’s and early 80’s when only two deer per season could be harvested.
In one of my early hunts as a youngster with mom and dad in Baldwin, Michigan, they had left me alone in a ground blind, which felt like miles from camp, but was probably only a couple hundred yards away. I had with me a Bear Grizzly Jr. recurve bow with wooden arrows. It was very cold that early morning when a group of deer appeared in front of me. In my excitement I ran out of arrows in a matter of minutes, because I wanted to prove myself so badly. Mom and dad just laughed and said “There’s always next time.” This is how my hunting with bow and arrow really grabbed a hold of my whole being and has kept me in its grip all these years.
At about this same time I also raised Basset Hounds for rabbit and pheasant hunting. We would hunt rabbits with bow and arrow in our own woods behind the house. This continued even after I married and had two sons. I taught them and their friends how to hunt rabbits using their dogs and bow and arrows. The archery hunting bug had also bitten them, and now they are passing it on to their own children. What Dad had started with me has branched out to my sons and their children and to all of our friends.
The first year of turkey season in the state of Michigan was held in the fall of 1966, I was lucky enough to draw a permit from the lottery and was able to harvest a young jake. In 1968 I shot my first deer(a spike horn) with a gun in my own backyard. In 1972 I made my first kill with a bow and arrow during archery deer season in Baldwin, Michigan, using a Pro Line cable bow and aluminum arrow with a Super Bear broad head. As of 2005, I have shot fifty plus deer with bow and arrow. I have also shot a wild Russian boar, turkey , rough fish, and a variety of other small game with a bow and arrow.
Today my sons and I are among only a handful of other hunters in our area during archery hunting season. We are now trying to build the herd of deer by taking more does than bucks, leaving one and a half year olds to two and a half year old bucks for next year’s harvest. This will ensure a healthier deer population.
My oldest son and I still hunt with compound bows. My youngest son has the same natural ability as my dad had and hunts traditionally with a recurve bow and wooden arrows.
With modern technology as it is today, Dad was ahead of his time back in the 70’s when still using cable bows, he had the idea to experiment with roller bearings in the limbs of the bow. Using my experience as a tool and die journeyman, I drilled and reamed out the limbs so we could insert the roller bearings. This greatly improved the speed of the arrow. We didn’t know then that this technology would be used by the industry and has furthermore improved to today’s modern compound bow.
My dad enjoyed helping other archers, and in the 1970’s lobbied along with the Michigan Bow Hunters Association, to allow tree stands to become a part of Michigan hunting rules. Being an avid bow hunter myself, I would like to continue in his footsteps, keeping archery and archery hunting a wholesome family sport.
My love of bow hunting and the out of doors spills over to summer activities with my grandchildren, such as fishing, boating, and swimming on a nearby lake, and nature walks through the woods around us, identifying birds, trees, plants, and other wildlife.
How do you feel about Archery and Canned Hunts, Why? Here are my opinions!
Archery and Canned Hunts
This may not be a trophy for the books, but sometimes they are still a trophy in your own mind. Shot opening day, October 1st, 06. Ive been watching and hoping his rack would grow and after 3 years nothing has happened, so I decided to take him out of herd in hopes that a better rack will take his place.
