Tips on Archery Bow Tuning
Few Tips for Tune ups
Archery bow tuning is an essential chore for any archery enthusiast. Without it, you risk having a bow that shoots erratically, and you’ll have a hard time improving with a faulty bow that shoots every arrow differently.
Here are a few helpful hints and tips for archery bow tuning.
1. Use the same arrows to tune your bow as you would use normally. If you plan on hunting with broad heads, then your archery bow tuning should be carried out using broad heads. Each type of arrow will shoot slightly different.
2. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on brace height. The longer the bow, the more draw weight it will take to pull the string backwards. Don’t buy a bow that is too big for you, or that you won’t be able to handle.
3. Anything you plan on using in the field (on your bow) use while tuning your bow. For instance, if you plan on hanging your quiver from your bow while hunting, have it hanging there when tuning your bow. Every little bit of extra weight will change your shot slightly.
4. Make sure your arrows are all straight. If they are slightly off it will make it wobble in flight. That’s never a good thing.
5. Set the nock point to ½ inch above square.
6. Make sure the string is in good condition and isn’t showing any fraying.
7. If you’re using a compound bow, check the wheels and pins. Make sure they are in good working order.
8. Set up about twenty to twenty five yards from your target. You must be far enough away from the target to watch the arrow in flight. This is crucial.
9. Loosen up. Draw the bow several times without releasing the arrows (and never dry fire. This is a good way to destroy your bow) in order to limber up.
10. While doing this, concentrate on your form. The next steps will rely on you having good form.
11. Shoot the arrows and watch the arrows in flight.
12. If the arrow flies straight, without wobbling, you’re done.
13. If it doesn’t you will have to make adjustments to the spine, nock point, and brace point or a combination of them all.
While more archery bow tuning steps could be offered, these are the basics to tuning your bow. Once your bow is tuned properly, your job will be much easier.
Now it’s time to practice!
